Initial Screening Assessment

Our occupational therapy services for individuals on the autism spectrum are grounded in evidence-based practice, ensuring high-quality and effective care. Each intervention is tailored to meet individual needs and delivered through a range of specialised programs.

What Is an Initial Screening Assessment?

An Initial Screening Assessment is a short, goal-focused appointment designed to determine whether occupational therapy is recommended and which type of intervention will best meet your child’s needs.

It’s an ideal first step for families seeking clarity, reassurance, or a pathway toward ongoing therapy.

During the session, our therapists observe and assess your child’s abilities in key developmental domains, such as:

  • Fine Motor Skills - pencil grasp, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity.

  • Gross Motor Skills - balance, coordination, and postural control.

  • Sensory Processing - how your child responds to touch, sound, and movement.

  • Self-Care and Daily Living Skills - dressing, toileting, feeding, and independence.

  • Social and Emotional Regulation - play, attention, and coping with change.

Why the Screening Matters

Early Identification: Detecting developmental needs early allows for timely, targeted support that can significantly improve participation and confidence.

Individualised Planning: Results guide therapy recommendations tailored to your child’s strengths, interests, and goals.

Family Empowerment: You’ll receive practical strategies and clear guidance on how to support pro gress at home and school.

Collaborative Care: We share insights with your wider care team - educators, GPs, and allied health professionals - for coordinated, holistic support.

What to Expect

  • The session typically runs for 45–60 minutes and includes observation, play-based tasks, and a short parent discussion.

  • At the end of the appointment, your therapist will provide a verbal summary of findings and recommend whether ongoing therapy or a full comprehensive assessment is appropriate.

  •

  • You’ll also receive a written summary report, outlining your child’s key strengths, focus areas, and next steps to support skill development and independence.

Our Initial Screening Assessment provides the foundation for that journey - helping families understand where their child is today and how we can work together to build confidence, independence, and participation in everyday life.
