Gross Motor Assessment

A Gross Motor Assessment evaluates how a child uses large muscle groups for movement, balance, and coordination. These skills are the foundation for play, participation, and school activities such as running, jumping, and sitting upright.

What Is a Gross Motor Assessment?

This assessment identifies how a child controls and coordinates their body for everyday movement. Our occupational therapists use standardised tests and observation-based analysis to assess core strength, balance, posture, and motor planning.

What We Assess

Balance and Coordination: stability during movement and play.

Core Strength and Posture:  endurance and control for seated and standing tasks.

Motor Planning and Sequencing: ability to organise and execute movements.

Spatial Awareness and Body Control: understanding of body position and movement in space.

Why a Gross Motor Assessment Matters

  • Identifies difficulties affecting play, sports, and classroom participation.

  • Supports interventions for coordination, endurance, and motor control.

  • Informs therapy to enhance participation in physical and social activities.

  • Guides targeted therapy to improve coordination, strength, and confidence.

  • Provides clear recommendations for home and classroom strategies.

What to expect

A Gross Motor Assessment typically takes 45–60 minutes and involves observation, movement-based play, and structured testing.

Families receive a detailed report outlining results, recommendations, and suggested next steps for therapy.

At Rocket Health Services, we help children move with confidence, strength, and coordination - so they can play, learn, and thrive.
